Voddler-logo-300x300Voddler, a Swedish service inevitably referred to as “Spotify for video”, is going global, expanding to Europe and Russia this week and the rest of the world in the coming months.

Voddler CEO and founder Marcus Bäcklund told TechCrunch that the service will initially roll out as a standalone product. “We have partnered with carriers in the past for VOD, and I think it’s possible to do that in the future as well here, but what we are really trying to do here is offer an independent and open platform for everyone,” he said. Bäcklund added that Voddler’s technology – it is based on P2P, serverless architecture – makes it easy for the company to expand geographically.

Voddler debuted in Scandinavia in 2010 and in Spain in 2012. It claims to have 1.2m users in total.
